Why "Cuba"?

John S. Minard's: Civic History of Cuba, pub. 1910

"Cuba is a Roman word and means Goddess or Protector of the Young. So in all probability, the Legislators of 1822, when they set aside the township from the town of Friendship, by accident, stumbled upon the word and appropriated the name, the significance of which is pleasant to think of."

Simeon DeWitt, the surveyor general for New York State in the early 1800's was an avid student of ancient Roman Mythology and is credited with suggesting the name.

The first "official" town meeting was held on the morning of Tuesday, March 5, 1822 at a location, known at the time as "Griffin Log Tavern".

"On the morning of that day (March 5, 1822) at 9 o'clock, there appeared seated around a large table in a public room of E.H. Griffin's inn, which stood where L. E. Dayton now lives, four justices of the peace duly appointed by the governor."

And so . . . from a Tavern to Cyberspace . .

WELCOME TO CUBA, NEW YORK!!!
